The covid lock down restrictions, have renewed my construction side of the hobby, that has always been a part of it for me. I was gifted Graupner Cirrus kit about 2 years ago now, that an ex German POW, who stayed in the UK, after the war had started As no one I knew was interested in it (it was not complete, front of ABS fuselage was missing plus some balsa items, but all the die cut items were still there) The initial problem was the missing front ABS fuselage shells, being missing. Fortunately through my contacts, a complete fuselage was found, all be it with the fin broken off where it met the fuselage. Having copleted a couple of projects, over the winter, thoughts turned to the Cirrus, as to completing it as an electric conversion project. Some said it was sacrlidge to electrify it, I pointed out that the kit did offer a pylon conversion, which looks more out of place than mounting a small electic motor in the nose.
Ailerons were another conversion, that I felt would be better than just using spoilers. With such small powerful servos available now, that were not, 52 years ago, when this kit was available initially. I then made the ailerons as of the Frize type, with a portion of the aileron, pojecting below the wing, to give a drag factor in the up position. One of the small 28mm inrunner direct drive motors that Neil does at Hyperflight, was just what I needed, but the fuselage being pretty capacious, against the models used now, a wide range of motors would have been easy to install. So some pictures of the model now in an uncovered state, awaiting painting the fuselage and covering with Oracover.
