While the bad weather continued for much of March there were several days (at least here in York) where the weather was calm and occasionally warm. After several months of little or no flying it was great to once again get back to the flying field.

The start of the new Annual Postal Series means that scores recorded for March and for April will appear in both the new Annual Series and in the current Winter Series.

Firstly, let me give a warm welcome to those who are new to the Postal Series. This month we have six newcomers and one returning previous contestant.

eSoaring Postal Series have been running for around twelve years and in all this time we have never had an issue of public safety. However, in March we had two separate occurrences on the same weekend of dog walkers approaching pilots during a flight and because they were unaware of the dangers involved to themselves and that their unrestrained dogs might either chase the model or be hit, flights were compromised. In one case the pilot knew the dog walker and was able to explain the problem and while his time was compromised he submitted it. In the second case the pilot made the decision to abort the flight and wait until it was safe to do so before landing. He reflew the flight and sent the scores in with a request that the refly be allowed. This we did and now propose to add an addendum to the rules allowing reflights if there is any issue of public safety.

The rules for the Postal Series were adapted from those that apply to UK National eSoaring competitions where issues of public safety are mitigated by the presence of other pilots or timers who would normally police the situation and minimise the problem. In such competitions the organiser, can for safety reasons, suspend flying until it is safe to do so. When flying Postal Competitions the pilot may be on his own or with only a timer and as flights must be made within a three hour window it is impractical at the time to contact anyone else for a clarification as to whether a flight can or cannot be reflown.

An amendment will be posted in the next few days and is intended to cover situations such as those described above. It will not cover flights abandoned due to weather changes or where the model is not flying properly.

Safety should always be our first priority and it does our hobby a disservice if we attract bad publicity which might lose flying sites and bring aeromodelling into disrepute.

I will be sending each of you new Excel Workbooks to replace those sent out last month. There have been problems partially because I have experimented with LibraOffice and Excel produces a warning that looks like a virus warning but is purely a compatibility warning. In addition some formatting (dates and times) did not transfer successfully. For these reasons an improved version has been created and will be sent out within a few days.

This month sees the continuation of the Winter Postal Series for 2017-18 as well as the start of the Annual Series for 2018. Scores recorded for March and for April will appear in both series. One set of monthly scores will appear but there will be two sets of series results until the Winter Series finishes in April.

And now to the scores recorded.

In Open, David Hunter continued his run of excellent scores winning with three flights close to maximum and perfect landings (1942 flight points normalised to a score of 1000). Anthony Brindle was second with 1908 giving 982 and Martyn Wharrie was third with 1785 normalised to 919.

A 2M score submitted by David Hall was missed and is now added. Apologies both to David and to others who move down the results as a consequence.

In 2M, we had two scores tied for first place. Paul Lewis, a newcomer to the Postal Comps, shared with Anthony Brindle, both having 1567 flight points normalised to 1000. Another newcomer David Hall came third 1556 normalised to 993 points. This moved Roger Keatley to fourth with 1436 normalised to 916 standardised points.

Well done to all who took part. Let’s hope that the weather co-operates in April.

If you submitted a score that does not appear in the results let me know ASAP and I will amend the results accordingly.
